2024 AMA Supercross Championship: Everything you need to know
What is the AMA Supercross?
Supercross is an indoor dirt bike racing sport, part of the off-road motorcycle racing discipline. The format involves high-speed races on artificially made dirt tracks with steep jumps and obstacles. Riders compete in two main classes based on engine size: 250cc and 450cc. The event format typically includes timed practice rounds, qualifying heats, and a main event. Points are awarded based on race finishes, contributing to season-long championship standings. Supercross is known for its intense, fast-paced action and requires a high level of skill and physical fitness from the riders.
When does the AMA Supercross start in 2024?
2024 AMA Supercross Championship season, there will be 17 races (January 6–May 12). In 2024, the Triple Crown will consist of all three races.
How many rounds are in Supercross?
Between January and May, there are seventeen Monster Energy Supercross competitions.
How does Supercross Work and its format?
In the Triple Crown format, there is a knockout LCQ for each class following qualification. If the top four finishers in the LCQ take the last four positions in each class, there will be 22 riders on the starting grid for each of the three races.
The top 18 qualifiers in each race are guaranteed to compete. Between the LCQs and the “night show” races, there will be a break for track maintenance and rider/team machine setup.
The top four LCQ finishers will receive the final four gate selections for the first race. The results of the first race will decide the starting positions for the second race. The outcome of Race 2 will decide the location of the starting gates for Race 3.
The Triple Crown method does not award points for individual races. The winner is selected by combining each horse’s finishes in the three races (the lower the number the better). As in a typical main event, cyclists will be awarded points according on their finish position once the final results have been determined.
When three teams finish in a three-way tie for third, the outcome with the highest absolute value prevails (a win beats a second place, a second place beats a third, etc.)
What is the Supercross Triple Crown?
Before the upcoming Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship, the Triple Crown was completed for the first time. The Triple Crown, like the Monster Energy Cup, comprises three races, however championship points are awarded after dark in the Triple Crown (unlike the off-season Monster Energy Cup race that is a stand-alone event).
The most talked-about change for 2022 will be the Monster Energy Supercross Triple Crown, a three-city competition staged in Angel Stadium in Anaheim on January 20, Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on March 3, and U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis on April 14. The main events in the 250SX Class will run between 6 and 12 minutes, while those in the 450SX Class will be between 8 and 15 minutes. The participant with the lowest cumulative score in the competition’s three main events wins each class.
